Private Residence, 'The Mushroom House'

Town of Pittsford, Monroe County, New York

MLA collaborated with the project architect, James Johnson, for the first addition to this unusual residence listed on the National Register of Historic Places since the structure was first erected in 1970. The addition consisted of an underground art studio and living space. MLA designed rooftop landscaping that highlighted the numerous 'spine-like' features of the structures roof. MLA utilized large limestone boulders in the creation of walls and a waterfall feature flowing below the mushroom pods and to a small pond on the property. Other important components of the project include a stone stairway, rear patio at the addition, site lighting, and plantings of native plantings that created a smooth transition to the surrounding wooded landscape.

Private Residence

Town of South Bristol, Ontario County, New York

MLA collaborated with the project architect, Kohlstadt and Frederickson, throughout various phases of the project. Work at this private residence included the preparation of conceptual plans through detailed construction drawings and planting plans for each phase of work. Located on a high cliff 100 ft. above Canandaigua Lake, this site features breathtaking views of the lake and the hills beyond. The steeply sloped site necessitated terracing of various levels above and to the sides of the main building. The owner's requirement of the use of natural materials wherever possible guided the use of large limestone boulders for walls surrounding the house, driveway, and parking area and ox-blood bluestone for patio surfaces. Other important components of the project include concrete and timber stairways, rear patio, and walkways, site lighting, and plantings of native and ornamental shrubs, perennials, and grasses.
